January 8, 2002
President Bush signs the No Child Left Behind Act into law.

2002-03
  • Local districts must test the English proficiency of Limited English Proficient students annually.
  • States must issue school report cards for the 2001-02 school year.
  • Schools already identified as failing under terms of the 1994 Elementary and Secondary Education Act become subject to the supplemental education and public school choice provisions of the No Child Left Behind Act. This means, according to a report by the Republican staff of the House education committee, that children in approximately 3,000 underachieving public schools would be eligible for "supplemental education services," including tutoring from private companies and nonprofit organizations.
2002-07
Effective dates for the Elementary and Secondary Education Act.

2005-06
  • All states must have annual tests in reading and mathematics in grades 3 through 8 in place.
  • All teachers must be "highly qualified."
2007-08
States must add science testing at least once in each of the following grade spans: 3-5, 6-9, 10-12.

2013-14
All students must be proficient.
